It’s always easy to love in the abstract. It’s always easy to be a peacemaker towards people you will never meet. But loving one another at the Thanksgiving family reunion or through community meetings or across the breakfast table…well, it is so much easier to gather up our abstract commitment to love and take it somewhere else in search of people more lovable. I believe we are all welcome at the table — whether that’s the dinner table, the community potluck, or the Eucharist — but, really, do I have to sit next to you?
